Description of the branches of the Armed Forces

The Air Force is part of the Department of Defense (DOD). It is responsible for military air operations, the defense of US air bases and airspace, and the construction of airstrips. Members of the Air Force are called aviators (“airmen”). The reserve is made up of the Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserve.

The Army is part of the DOD and is the largest of the five branches of the Armed Forces. It is responsible for the largest ground combat missions, especially ongoing operations. The Army Special Forces unit is known as the Green Berets. This name is used for the hat that is part of their uniform. Members of the Army are called soldiers. The reserve is made up of the Army National Guard and the Army Reserve.

The US Coast Guard is part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). They are responsible for enforcing maritime law, including combating drug trafficking. They are in charge of maritime search and rescue operations, as well as the protection of the marine environment. They also deal with security in ports, waterways and coastlines. Members of this branch of the Armed Forces are called coast guards. The reserve of this branch is the Coast Guard Reserve.

The Marine Corps is part of the DOD. Support the other branches of the Armed Forces in land, sea and air operations during a mission. It also protects US embassies and the documents classified in them. Members of the Marine Corps Special Operations Command (MARSOC) are known as “Raiders.” Members of this branch of the Armed Forces are called “Marines.” The reserve for this branch is the Marine Corps Reserve.

The Navy is part of the DOD. Protects waterways (sea and ocean) beyond Coast Guard jurisdiction. Navy ships have runways for planes to land and take off when they are at sea. Navy SEALs are the special operations force of this branch of the Armed Forces. Members of the Navy are called sailors. The reserve of this branch is the Navy.

The Space Force (in English) is a new branch of the Armed Forces, created in December 2019 from the former Air Force Space Command. The Space Force is part of the Department of the Air Force. This branch is responsible for protecting the interests of the United States and its allies in space.
How to become an officer in the Armed Forces

Commissioned officers are the highest-ranking military officers in the Armed Forces. They supervise plans, direct operations, give orders and command units. They generally have at least a college degree (bachelor’s degree).

Officers have authority over enlisted members. They also have greater responsibilities.

To remain on active duty, officers have to be promoted at certain stages of their career. In reward for the higher level of responsibility, officers have higher salaries and additional benefits.
